Diffusion- and perfusion-weighted imaging in vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Better measures of cerebral tissue perfusion and earlier detection of ischemic injury are needed to guide therapy in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients with vasospasm. We sought to identify tissue ischemia and early ischemic injury with combined diffusion-weighted (DW) and hemodynamically weighted (HW) MRI in patients with vasospasm after SAH. METHODS Combined DW an...
متن کاملVasospasm: Effect on Cerebral Perfusion and Threshold of Injury
In those who survive the initial impact of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), delayed ischemic neurological deficit (DIND) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite therapeutic advances leading to decreased case fatality rate of 0.9% per year from 1960 to 1992, mainly attributed to improved prevention of rebleeding, the 30-day case fatality rate has remained static, and a...
متن کاملDynamic CT perfusion imaging in subarachnoid hemorrhage-related vasospasm.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Nimodipine is a therapy that reduces morbidity and mortality in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), though the mechanisms by which it does so are not well understood. In a rabbit model of SAH, we studied the effects of nimodipine by using functional CT imaging. We hypothesized that the nimodipine treatment group would have (1) increased mean basilar artery diamet...
متن کاملCerebral perfusion imaging using EIT
Imaging of cerbral perfusion is understood to provide rich information on cerebral processes. This study explores whether EIT is able to image perfusion in the brain. In a single rat, a bolus of hypertonic saline was introduced into an arterial catheter during two activity states, and EIT images reconstructed. Results suggest that changes in perfusion pattern are visible in EIT images.
متن کاملAdvanced Imaging Modalities in the Detection of Cerebral Vasospasm
The pathophysiology of cerebral vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is complex and is not entirely understood. Mechanistic insights have been gained through advances in the capabilities of diagnostic imaging. Core techniques have focused on the assessment of vessel caliber, tissue metabolism, and/or regional perfusion parameters. Advances in imaging have provided clinic...
